Release 0.157.3: Security and Testing Infrastructure Improvements

We’re pleased to announce the release of Screeps GPT version 0.157.3, a focused maintenance release that strengthens our security posture and testing infrastructure. While this release doesn’t introduce new features, it delivers critical improvements to the integrity and reliability of our documentation and testing frameworks.

Key Changes

This release addresses two important technical issues discovered in our recent codebase:

  • Fixed Chart.js SRI Integrity Hash: Corrected the Subresource Integrity (SRI) hash for Chart.js CDN integration in analytics documentation
  • Standardized MCP Test Naming: Aligned Model Context Protocol (MCP) test expectations with implementation naming conventions (underscore-based identifiers)

Technical Details

Chart.js SRI Integrity Hash Correction

Problem: The analytics documentation page (packages/docs/source/docs/analytics.md) contained an incorrect SRI hash for the Chart.js CDN script. Subresource Integrity hashes are cryptographic signatures that browsers use to verify that CDN-delivered resources haven’t been tampered with or modified. An incorrect hash would cause the browser to reject the Chart.js library, breaking all performance visualizations on the analytics page.

Solution: We updated the SRI integrity attribute from the incorrect hash to the correct SHA-384 hash for Chart.js version 4.4.0. This ensures that:

  • Browsers can successfully load and validate the Chart.js library from the CDN
  • Users are protected from potential CDN compromise or man-in-the-middle attacks
  • Performance metrics visualizations render correctly on the analytics documentation page

Why This Approach: SRI is a critical security feature that protects users from malicious script injection. We deliberately pin Chart.js to version 4.4.0 for stability and predictability, which means the SRI hash must exactly match this specific version. The hash was corrected by generating it from the canonical Chart.js 4.4.0 distribution on the jsDelivr CDN.

MCP Test Naming Convention Standardization

Problem: The Screeps MCP (Model Context Protocol) server implementation uses underscore-based naming for tools (e.g., screeps_console, screeps_memory_get), but the test suite was checking for dot-based names (e.g., screeps.console, screeps.memory.get). This inconsistency caused test failures and made it difficult to validate that the MCP server correctly implements the protocol specification.

Why Underscores: The Model Context Protocol specification recommends using underscores as separators in tool names to avoid parsing ambiguity and ensure compatibility with various client implementations. Tool names like screeps_console are clearer and less prone to interpretation issues than screeps.console, which could be confused with object property access notation.

Solution: We systematically updated all MCP protocol compliance tests to expect underscore-based naming:

  • Changed tool name expectations from screeps.console to screeps_console
  • Updated tool name pattern matching from /^screeps\./ to /^screeps_/
  • Modified tool name validation regex from /^[a-z]+(\.[a-z]+)*$/ to /^[a-z]+(_[a-z]+)*$/

This ensures that tests validate the actual implementation rather than an outdated naming convention.

Impact: These test updates ensure that our MCP server correctly implements the protocol specification and that future changes to the server won’t inadvertently break naming conventions. This is particularly important for GitHub Copilot workflows that rely on the MCP server for direct Screeps console and memory access.

Design Rationale

Security-First Documentation

The Chart.js SRI fix exemplifies our commitment to security-first documentation practices. Rather than simply removing the SRI attribute (which would allow the script to load), we invested the effort to determine the correct hash. This maintains the security benefits of SRI while ensuring functionality.

Our documentation uses SRI for all third-party CDN resources to protect readers from:

  • Compromised CDN infrastructure
  • Man-in-the-middle attacks on CDN traffic
  • Unauthorized modifications to dependencies

Test-Driven Quality Assurance

The MCP test naming fixes demonstrate the value of comprehensive test coverage. Our test suite caught the naming inconsistency, preventing potential integration issues with GitHub Copilot workflows that depend on the MCP server. By maintaining strict protocol compliance tests, we ensure that:

  • Breaking changes to MCP tool naming are detected immediately
  • The MCP server remains compatible with clients expecting standard naming conventions
  • Future refactoring won’t inadvertently break automation workflows

None. This release is fully backward-compatible with version 0.157.1.
